Bringing food production back to the city
Spring, 2022
As part of its commitment to sustainable agriculture and urban innovation, FILIPOPOL successfully developed a pilot rooftop urban farming project on the roof of an industrial building in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The initiative demonstrated how underutilised urban spaces can be transformed into productive green areas while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable food system.
The pilot combined modern cultivation techniques with resource-efficient production methods to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of rooftop vegetable production under real operating conditions. Different cultivation systems and crop varieties were assessed to identify the most suitable solutions for urban environments.
Key achievements
- Successful cultivation of fresh vegetables on an industrial rooftop.
- Validation of sustainable growing techniques for urban environments.
- Practical experience in rooftop farming design and operation.
- Increased awareness of urban agriculture among local stakeholders.
